Piper House

Piper House (28K)

Image: Piper House. Piper House served as Confederate Major General James Longstreet's headquarters during the battle. From here, Longstreet directed the defence of the Confederate centre of the line. It was also from here that D. H. Hill took a small group of infantry and artillery, and held the Union in check at Bloody Lane until reinforcements arrived. Longstreet himself is supposed to have helped man a cannon on the hill just east of (behind) the house.

Piper House is now used as a bed and breakfast, allowing visitors to stay for the night on the actual battlefield. I was lucky enough to spend two nights in the same bedroom used by Longstreet.
